Lorri is an internationally renowned autism advocate. She currently serves as CEO of The Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP) Lorri began her career as an appellate attorney with the United States Department of Justice and then as a full-time law professor. Following her son, Ryan, being diagnosis with autism, she began volunteering for autism causes, writing ground-breaking autism insurance legislation for South Carolina (“Ryan’s Law”) that passed in 2007 and served as the catalyst for the national movement toward autism insurance reform.
She served for a decade as the national head of state government affairs for the international nonprofit Autism Speaks. Lorri is also the founder of the annual Autism Law Summit, now in its 19th year, and is co-author of the law school textbook “Autism and the Law.”
Dan is an attorney, founder of the Autism Legal Resource Center and co-founder of The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment. Dan previously served as the founding Executive Director of the Autism Speaks Legal Resource Center, where he worked to secure improved insurance and Medicaid coverage for individuals with autism in over 40 states.
He has worked with federal and state regulators to secure improved guidance and enforcement on autism-related issues and has filed amicus briefs on autism legal issues in state and federal appeals courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He is co-author of the law school casebook “Autism and the Law” and has presented on legal topics pertaining to autism at numerous national conferences and trainings.
Ryan's Law
The South Carolina General Assembly passed the bill known as “Ryan’s Law” in June 2007. Ryan's Law requires health insurance to cover evidence-based therapy for autism, including ABA. Ryan’s Law served as the catalyst for a national movement toward autism insurance reform.
Autism Speaks
Following the passage of Ryan’s Law, Lorri Unumb joined Autism Speaks and served for more than a decade as the national Vice President for State Government Affairs. In this role, she traveled extensively and tirelessly with the continued drive to pass autism mandates in other states. In part as a result of her passion, dedication, and expertise, all 50 states have now passed laws or taken other state action to ensure that health insurance covers ABA. Dan Unumb subsequently joined Autism Speaks to help ensure that the autism insurance laws were being properly implemented and enforced. Dan served as the founding Executive Director of the Autism Speaks Legal Resource Center.
The Council of Autism Service Providers
Lorri Unumb left Autism Speaks in May 2019 to lead The Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP), an international nonprofit membership association that cultivates, shares, and advocates for best practices in autism services. The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment is a proud member of CASP.
Autism Legal Resource Center
Dan Unumb serves as the founder and President of the Autism Legal Resource Center, which develops and protects the legal rights of people with autism and providers who serve them.
Autism Law Summit
The Autism Law Summit is an annual, two-day gathering of parent advocates, autism service providers, lawyers, individuals with autism, lobbyists, and legislators from across the United States who are interested in the politics and policy of autism spectrum disorders. The Autism Law Summit creates space for interactive, high-level, expert-facilitated conversations on improving health insurance, Medicaid, and adult services.
